Advance Base (formerly Casiotone For The Painfully Alone)
Advance Base is a new solo project by Owen Ashworth, formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Walking the line between electronic pop & more traditional singer/songwriter forms, Owen Ashworth builds minimalist, heavy-hearted, & nostalgia-obsessed tunes around his conversational, baritone vocals, using electric pianos, Omnichords, orchestral samples, & antique drum machines. The sound of Advance Base has been described as "depressed," "lo-fi," & "pop." The second Advance Base album, Nephew in the Wild, will be released August 21, 2015 on Orindal Records (US/AQ) & Tomlab Records (EU/UK).

Hello Shark
The loveliness of Hello Shark is hard to capture in words. Lincoln Halloran’s Philadelphia via Vermont project has been consistently releasing some of the most heart-wrenching pop tunes since 2006. But it was 2011’s Break Arms that proved Halloran to be one of the most eloquent songwriters around. Each track on the devastatingly intimate record contains the power to completely destroy through simple sincerity. “I don’t know why The Rolling Stones put me down,” he sings on “The Rolling Stones“. “And you don’t know how bad I wish that you were around.” 2013’s HS is equally good.
Today, Hello Shark is releasing a song that hopefully hints at a larger future release. “Fishing For Bats” is unlike the songs on Break Arms and HS, but Halloran’s candid narrative once again shines. This time, the story is of a long lost lover, beautifully composed through careful images. “Too much wine lost track of time and threw things out the window,” Halloran sings. “Woke up with wine all over me / Bled through my floral sheets.” Another particularly hard-hitting line reveals the impact of the relationship: “You are my only regret / I’m just still trying to hide it.” “Fishing For Bats” was recorded by Keith Hampson (Power Animal) and Michael Rheinheimer (Attic Abasement) and features vocals by Free Cake For Every Creature‘s Katie Bennett.

Tantrum
Michika McClinton is back with a video for a new Tantrum song titled "Karma." It's the first look at the shape of things to come with her new LP, Ojos, due out this Fall. Details regarding the album are still coming together, but what's immediately noticeable is the tremendous amount of artistic growth she has undergone since releasing Tantrum's XYO cassette and CD in November 2014.
The musical palette, the concepts, and the visual presentation all demonstrate an impressive maturity. The song is a collaboration with DAB Bowie. The video was directed by Jamye Luu of Oceanland Studio, and like most time-tested and battle-proven pop songwriting, "Karma" leaves plenty of room to roam around in its survey of exotic locales and the many characters McClinton plays. Is it a cautionary tale? Or is it simply a meditation on the essential balance of the universe? It's all a matter for the eyes and the ears of the beholder to decide.
Keep an eye out for mere details regarding the album, and a full Q&A with McClinton coming soon.
