Nequient
Nequient is a metallic hardcore band from Chicago. Drawing from a wide range of influences - including the best of crust, sludge, grind, old-school death metal, and black metal - the quartet pummels listeners from all directions but never forgets to land the hook. They specialize in relentless, fleet-fingered riffs backed by d-beats, single-foot blasts, and an array of inventive fills. The vocals shift from mid-range barks to death metal grunts and pained shrieks, unified by inexhaustible aggression and a lyrical bent toward social critique.
The band’s initial five-piece lineup came together in early 2014 when drummer Chris Avgerin (Heaving Mass, Blood of the Tyrant, Black Sites) and vocalist Jason Kolkey joined up to play raw, vicious crust. Nequient honed its sharp delivery as a live unit and worked on increasingly varied new material over the course of a few personnel shifts. Following the arrival of guitar player Patrick Conahan, the band began touring regionally and recorded 2015’s Infinite Regress EP with producer Pete Grossmann (Weekend Nachos, Immortal Bird, Without Waves) at Bricktop Recording.
In early 2017, the group settled on its current configuration as a quartet with bassist Keenan Clifford. Nequient spearheaded a politically motivated benefit compilation titled Fight Liar with Fire, issued through Sassbologna Records, before returning to Bricktop to work on a debut full-length album. The band set out to spotlight their diverse songwriting and technical capabilities without sacrificing an ounce of aggression. Nequient released Wolves at the Door in May 2018 through Nefarious Industries and Sassbologna and embarked on tours of the East Coast and the Midwest.
