Doug Tuttle
Every time Doug Tuttle writes and performs a song, it seems like he’s channeling creativity from another dimension. His brand of psych-folk is unique in the sense of how stripped down it sounds while at the same time maintaining a distinct poignancy and emphasis. The New Hampshire native’s new album, Peace Potato, is out May 5 on indie label Trouble In Mind, and there’s a sheen of vintage pop that shines through every song. An excellent example of that is standout track “Only In A Dream,” which has psychedelic tendencies and a mellow vibe. “[It] started as two separate songs, both written around the time my first record came out,” Tuttle tells Vanyaland of “Only In A Dream’s” origin. “Each song had a section I really liked, but something was a little off with both. As time passed it occurred to me that both songs were about the same topic, learning to deal with a loved one’s mental illness, and that they shared a similar tempo/feel. I decided to change the key of each part so they’d work relative to one another, and added an instrumental interlude between the two. It took a few tries to get the recording where I wanted it, but all in all I’m fairly happy with it in this final attempt.” Tuttle will be embarking on a spring tour in support of Peace Potato that starts at Vermont’s Waking Windows festival on the same day of the album’s release. -Vanyaland
RIYL: Neil Young, Kurt Vile, The Bachs, Harumi, CCR, Mayo Thompson, Byrds, Solar Motel Band, Steve Gunn, Gun Outfit, Gene Clark.

Grand Vapids
Grand Vapids is a force. A wave of sound propelling "gorgeously defined and thoughtfully executed guitar slow-pop". Gordon Lamb - Flagpole
Forming in early 2014, Grand Vapids spent the course of a year recording its debut album Guarantees with producer and engineer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Deerhunter, Kishi Bashi) at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA. On the album the sonic palette is wide. Withguitars that are laboriously crafted, a driving rhythm section, and synths that are densely layered and structured. The songs are at once intimate and expansive, exploring a fevered state of fear and wonder. The album was mastered by Joe Lambert (Wye Oak, Sharon Van Etten, Wild Nothing) in NYC. While Grand Vapids' music could easily satiate the space between Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, there is a depth of feeling to these songs that moves beyond nostalgia and pushes the listener toward a state of mind where memory and wonderment intersect. It is a delicate and dense balance on a debut record that finds the band carving out its own musical identity.
