Heaven
Heaven
Brooklyn-based psych-rock band, Heaven, announce their sophomore album, All Love is Blue, due out on March 2, 2018 via Little Cloud Records. The 10-track LP is produced by the band, engineered by Albert DiFiore (Caveman, Sinkane, Beck) mixed by Al Carlson (Zola Jesus, Widowspeak).
Heaven is Matt Sumrow (vocals and guitar), Mikey Jones (drums) and Liz Lohse (keyboards and vocals). Sumrow and Jones created the band in the wake of touring and recording with artists such as Dean and Britta, Swervedriver, Ambulance LTD, The Comas, Snowden, The Big Sleep and others.
A romantic clash between your Dad’s long-lost favorite psych record and the soundtrack to a John Hughes film, Heaven ride a massive sonic wave in delivering their dear and dreamy tracks. In July of 2013, Heaven released their debut LP Telepathic Love on Goodnight Records. The live lineup came together on the touring of Telepathic Love with the addition of keyboardist Liz Lohse (X-Ray Eyeballs), who has since become a permanent member.
As 2018 sees the release of All Love Is Blue on Little Cloud Records, out of Portland, Oregon, subsequent tour dates for Heaven in support of the album will follow. Their new work is a quantum leap forward for the band, both artistically and sonically, making the protracted wait between albums a huge payoff.
A Drug Called Tradition
In late 2014, after the dissolution of Atlanta heavy psych stalwarts Abby Gogo, singer/guitarist Bon Allinson began working on a batch of songs more heavily influenced by his upbringing in Alabama and by the musical traditions of the South. He brought these songs to drummer Puma Navarro (Abby Gogo) and bassist Asha Lakra (Tikka) and A Drug Called Tradition was born. As the trio’s sound developed, influences ranging from the laid back vibe of Kurt Vile to the guitar stylings of Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth, could be heard alongside echoes of the Krautrock of Can and the prog psych of early Pink Floyd.
ADCT made their Atlanta debut in December 2014, opening for Matt Hollywood of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. After playing local shows for the next few months, the trio cut a three song demo to tape with Spencer Garn (Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics) at Diamond Street Studios. The band then joined up with Spirits and the Melchizedek Children for a tour around the southeast.
In December 2015, ADCT will head to Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi to record a full length album for Cornelius Chapel Records with Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers) and Tim Kerr (Big Boys).
Stefan Murphy (Count Vaseline)
Count Vaseline is an alternative rock project founded in 2016 by songwriter, musician and producer ’Stefan Murphy’ during a creative spell in Berlin Germany. Following only a handful of live appearances in Germany, Count Vaseline decamped to the US to begin working on what would quickly become his first album ‘Yo No Soy Marinero’. The narrative of the record is very personal and details a difficult phase in Murphy’s life and creativity as well as a celebration of his trials and tribulations in Berlin.
‘’They almost let me into the Berghain, but then they got wise
‘when I accidentally puked in the Bouncers eyes” – Divebombing
Making the decision to stay in the US was closely followed by a Presidential election that was going to send the universe into something of a tailspin. The rise of Donald Trump as well as a lot of depressing reading about the cyclical patterns in world politics quickly gave birth to The Count’s second album, the very minimal ‘Cascade’.
“No Politics exists that will protect you from the horror of these times” – Cascade
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom ‘Russia’, the forthcoming single, is designed to make the people dance!! The song was inspired by the documentary film ‘Hypernormalization’ and is a personal account of two lovers trying to break free from the constraints of the modern world. The song is deliberately performed at 117 beats per minute, the same BPM as Quincy jones / Michael Jacksons magnum opus ‘Billie Jean’, one of the most danceable tunes in history.
